Family-Gear started when my partner and I were registering for baby gifts, prior to the birth of our first child. We became acutely aware that our merchandise choices, like bibs, clothing, picture frames, and other family gear referenced traditional mother/father relationships. We therefore set out to recognize same-sex relationships through product choices that mass merchandisers weren't offering, but that we as two moms, aunts and eventually grandmas would buy in a heartbeat if they did. To include all consumers, youths to adults and singles to couples, our line also includes Family-Gear branded merchandise, like backpacks, travel mugs, beach bags, fleece pullovers and blankets. This is our fun way of providing the gay and lesbian community with a brand that celebrates diversity and equality, through unique, functional and cool gear that can be worn or carried anywhere.
From our first product concept, quality has led our merchandise choices. We embroider all our fabric products so the consumer has a durable and unique gift selection from which to choose. While this process costs us more, you'll find reasonable prices on our site, as value to the consumer is important to us. We're also proud of the basic product choices we offer, as we really do offer something useful for everyone, in a variety of colors and sizes.
Out of the gate, our biggest challenge involves promoting our products at a reasonable return on investment. We're predominantly relying on PR activities and exhibitor opportunities, as our products do very well when seen firsthand. To this point, our ongoing goal is to provide the best possible website for the ultimate shopping experience. We have a liberal return policy and to date we've had no returns and have only received positive feedback regarding our products.
Like you, we believe in our hearts in equality, and Family-Gear is our effort to celebrate family pride. And yes, by family we mean the gay and lesbian community AND diverse family units. I feel lucky to stay at home with our two beautiful children and simultaneously promote diversity and equality.
